A Complete Guide to Pressure Sensor

什麼是壓力感測器?

A pressure sensor is a device that measures the pressure of a fluid or gas and converts it into an electrical signal. It is commonly used in various industries and applications to monitor and control pressure levels.

Pressure sensors typically consist of a sensing element that deforms under the applied pressure, causing a change in an electrical property such as resistance, capacitance, or voltage. This change is then measured and converted into a corresponding pressure reading.

How Does a Pressure Sensor Work?

A pressure sensor works by detecting the applied pressure and converting it into an electrical signal. The exact working principle depends on the type of pressure sensor, but I’ll explain the general principles behind two common types: strain gauge pressure sensors and capacitive pressure sensors.

Strain Gauge Pressure Sensors

Strain Gauge Pressure Sensors

Strain gauge pressure sensors offer advantages such as high sensitivity, good linearity, and a wide pressure range. They are commonly used in applications such as industrial process control, automotive systems, aerospace, and hydraulic systems, among others.

Diaphragm Design

Strain gauge pressure sensors consist of a diaphragm made of a flexible material, such as metal or silicon. The diaphragm is designed to deform when subjected to pressure.

Strain Gauge Arrangement

Strain gauges are attached to the diaphragm. These strain gauges are typically thin wires or foil patterns made of a material that changes its electrical resistance when subjected to mechanical strain.

Wheatstone Bridge Circuit

The strain gauges are arranged in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. A Wheatstone bridge is a circuit consisting of four resistive elements, where the strain gauges are connected as two resistors forming opposite arms of the bridge.

阻力變化

When pressure is applied to the diaphragm, it deforms, causing strain in the strain gauges. This strain leads to a change in their electrical resistance. The strain gauges in compression decrease their resistance, while those in tension increase their resistance.

Bridge Output

The Wheatstone bridge circuit is supplied with a constant voltage or current. The change in resistance of the strain gauges causes an imbalance in the bridge circuit, resulting in a voltage output.

Signal Conditioning

The voltage output from the Wheatstone bridge is a small differential voltage proportional to the applied pressure. To enhance the signal and make it suitable for further processing, signal conditioning techniques such as amplification and filtering are applied.

校準

Once the signal has been conditioned, it undergoes calibration to establish a relationship between the measured voltage and the corresponding pressure values. This calibration is typically done using reference pressure standards or calibration equipment.

Pressure Measurement

With the calibrated relationship, the output voltage can be converted into an accurate pressure reading using appropriate conversion algorithms or lookup tables.

Capacitive Pressure Sensors

電容式壓力感測器

Capacitive pressure sensors offer advantages such as high accuracy, stability, and low power consumption. They are used in various applications, including automotive systems, medical devices, HVAC systems, and industrial process control, where precise pressure measurements are required.

Capacitor Structure

Capacitive pressure sensors consist of a structure with two conductive plates separated by a dielectric material. One plate is fixed, while the other plate is movable and connected to a diaphragm that deforms under pressure.

Capacitance Change

When pressure is applied to the diaphragm, it causes the movable plate to move closer or farther away from the fixed plate. This movement alters the distance between the plates and, consequently, changes the capacitance between them.

Capacitance Measurement

To measure the capacitance, the sensor is connected to an oscillator circuit that generates an oscillating electrical signal. The capacitance of the sensor affects the frequency or phase of the oscillation.

Oscillator Circuit

The oscillator circuit typically generates a high-frequency signal and is designed to be sensitive to changes in capacitance. The circuit compares the capacitance of the pressure sensor with a reference capacitance or a known value.

Pressure-Dependent Oscillation

As pressure is applied, the capacitance of the pressure sensor changes, resulting in a corresponding change in the frequency or phase of the oscillator signal. This change in signal is detected and used to determine the applied pressure.

訊號處理

The output of the oscillator circuit is processed using signal conditioning techniques such as amplification and filtering to enhance the signal quality and eliminate noise.

校準

The output signal is calibrated by establishing a relationship between the measured frequency or phase and the corresponding pressure values. Calibration is typically performed using reference pressure standards or calibration equipment.

Pressure Measurement

With the calibrated relationship, the output frequency or phase can be converted into an accurate pressure reading using appropriate conversion algorithms or lookup tables.

Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors

壓電壓力感測器

Piezoelectric pressure sensors offer advantages such as high sensitivity, fast response time, and wide frequency response. They are commonly used in applications such as automotive engine monitoring, aerospace, industrial systems, and scientific research where rapid and precise pressure measurements are required.

Piezoelectric Material

Piezoelectric pressure sensors utilize materials that exhibit the piezoelectric effect, which is the ability to generate an electrical charge when subjected to mechanical stress. Common piezoelectric materials used include quartz, ceramic, and certain types of crystals.

Piezoelectric Element

The sensor consists of a piezoelectric element, typically in the form of a thin disc, wafer, or crystal. This element is designed to deform under applied pressure.

Generation of Electrical Charge

When pressure is applied to the piezoelectric element, it deforms or compresses, causing mechanical stress on the material. As a result, the piezoelectric material generates an electrical charge or voltage across its surfaces.

Charge Measurement

The electrical charge generated by the piezoelectric element is measured using charge amplifiers or charge converters. These devices convert the charge into a proportional voltage signal.

Signal Conditioning

The voltage signal from the charge amplifier is further conditioned to enhance the signal quality, such as amplifying and filtering to remove noise and unwanted interference.

校準

The output voltage is calibrated by establishing a relationship between the measured voltage and the corresponding pressure values. Calibration is typically performed using reference pressure standards or calibration equipment.

Pressure Measurement

With the calibrated relationship, the output voltage can be converted into an accurate pressure reading using appropriate conversion algorithms or lookup tables.

Optical Pressure Sensors

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors

One type of optical pressure sensor uses Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs). FBGs are periodic variations in the refractive index of an optical fiber. When pressure is applied, it causes mechanical stress on the FBG, resulting in a shift in the wavelength of light reflected by the grating.

Interferometric Sensors

Another type of optical pressure sensor is based on interferometry. These sensors use techniques such as Fabry-Perot interferometry or Michelson interferometry to measure pressure. The pressure-induced deformation of a sensing element affects the optical interference pattern, which can be detected and correlated to the applied pressure.

光源

Optical pressure sensors require a light source, such as a laser diode, to emit light into the sensing element or fiber optic network.

Optical Fiber Network

The sensing element or fiber optic network contains the pressure-sensitive components, such as FBGs or interferometric structures. The optical fiber carries the light signal to and from these components.

Light Detection

The light that interacts with the pressure-sensitive components is detected using photodetectors. These devices convert the light signal into an electrical signal that can be measured and processed.

訊號處理

The electrical signal is processed and analyzed to extract pressure-related information. This may involve demodulating the signal, compensating for environmental factors, and performing calibration.

校準

Optical pressure sensors are calibrated by establishing a relationship between the measured optical signal and the corresponding pressure values. This calibration is typically done using reference pressure standards or calibration equipment.

Pressure Measurement

With the calibrated relationship, the optical signal can be converted into an accurate pressure reading using appropriate conversion algorithms or lookup tables.
